Yesterdays career and training event for residents from the Mansfield and Ashfield area was a huge success, offering a vibrant space for local people to connect with employers, education providers, and support services. Held from 10am to 4pm, the event saw 177 attendees, including the Mayor of Mansfield, who spoke to visitors about the importance of taking small steps in their career journey. He emphasised how every job, no matter how small, plays a vital role in shaping a wider career path and provides invaluable learning experiences.
The event provided access to a range of resources, from life skills and job readiness to career guidance, education, and mental health support. Representatives from Futures and our partners were on hand to offer personalised advice and information, ensuring that attendees could find the right support for their individual needs. Three customers from a Futures programme also volunteered to help run the event, with one even securing a further volunteering opportunity at a local business, showcasing the power of community collaboration.
A standout feature of the event was the skills development segment, which ran from 10am to 2pm. Futures’ skills team, along with partners like West Nottinghamshire College, Nottingham Trent University, and Academy Transformation Trust Further Education, shared valuable training opportunities. From entry-level skills to vocational training, apprenticeships, and higher education, attendees gained insight into the many pathways available to them.
The event also featured a range of local employers, including Premier Security, Sure Care, Stagecoach, Avon, and the British Heart Foundation, who were eager to connect with job seekers and discuss current opportunities. This provided valuable face-to-face time for residents to ask questions and explore potential career paths.
Employers attending the event were full of praise, with one commenting, “It was an extremely well-organised event and fruitful for everyone involved.” Another added, “This is what a community event should be—an opportunity for people, businesses, and public services to connect with a shared hope for the future.”
The event was a great success, creating countless opportunities for local residents to take the next step in their careers. The positive community spirit demonstrated the power of collaboration and mutual support.
